What is
BONFIRE
NIGHT?
Let's find out!
For centuries, people of the UK have celebrated the night of November 5th by lighting fireworks and making bonfires. The reason they do this is because of a failed attempt to blow up Parliament in England that happened on 5 November, 1605.
This was known as the gunpowder plot and it was devised in response to King James I, who was the king at the time. The conspirators did not like how King James refused to give greater religious tolerance to Catholics and thus they decided to try and blow up the houses of parliament using gunpowder.
The plot failed due to betrayal on the side of the conspirators. One of the members, Guy Fawkes, was the first to be caught and tried, which is why the 5th November is also known as Guy Fawkes Night.
The reason it became an event to be celebrated was because Parliament decided to declare the day a national day of thanksgiving in response to the failed attempt.
We now celebrate the occasion with fireworks which represent the explosives that weren’t able to be used in the plot. The bonfire usually has an effigy on it which represents Guy Fawkes, symbolising the triumph over treason.
